Women and Spiritual Emergence

You are your own medicine.

What is spiritual emergence? “The movement of an individual to a more expanded way of being that involves enhanced emotional and psychosomatic health, greater freedom of personal choices, and a sense of deeper connection with other people, nature, and the cosmos. An important part of this development is an increasing awareness of the spiritual dimension in one’s life and in the universal scheme of things.”

(Grof & Grof, 1990)

Also known as spiritual awakening, it’s not uncommon for women to experience this at some point in their midlife. It can be a time of discovery and greater awareness, but it can also be overwhelming. Since it is impossible to unsee or unknow the deepening understanding of your power and personal medicine that comes with spiritual awakening the question becomes, how to live with that new understanding and put it to good use in one’s life. Navigating daily life during a spiritual awakening can create confusion. And yet, the alternative of pretending nothing has changed in your inner world begins to feel inauthentic and can cause greater frustration and confusion.

You may be experiencing a spiritual awakening if you feel a greater connection with spirits, angels, nature, animals, heightened sensitivity to your environment, greater ability to feel energy, a sense of being psychic, to name a few of the common indications. For women spiritual awakening may correspond with a sense of sexual awakening or a connection between sexual feelings and spirital awareness. It can be difficult to discuss these experiences with family and friends and even with therapists and therefore difficult to understand and integrate your spiritual awareness into your daily life.

Why is it important to understand and integrate your spiritual awareness? My experience and worldview is that we all carry special and unique medicine to heal ourselves and our immediate family and friends. The blessing of spiritual awakening is that our access to what and how we can be of service in life becomes increasingly clear. If we chose not to open to this opportunity once we are aware of it, we deny a fundamental aspect of our authentic life purpose. If we choose to open up to our personal medicine, we have possibility of deep personal healing and enriching the lives of our loved ones and perhaps larger circles of people in our community.

A word of caution: for some women a spiritual awakening may cause a sense of instability, loss of control, ungroundedness, flightiness, or delusions of being all-powerful, or a sense of victimization or being under attack. This is not what I mean when I encourage openess to spiritual awakening. It is not only possible but critical that one stay grounded and focused on the practical, daily value of this new awareness. By staying grounded you keep your own spirit connected to your body so that you can deliver your personal medicine in a focused and effective way.

Here are a few tips for how to begin to understand and integrate your spiritual awareness:

  • Don’t automatically assume you are going crazy
  • Learn some basic shamanic journeying techniques to help guide your intentionality and develop a dialog with spirits, guides, angels or teachers (I like Sandra Ingerman’s book “Shamanic Journeying“)
  • Avoid spiritual bypassing or using this awakening as a way to avoid things that need your attention or to justify behaviors in your life that are not serving you
  • Spend extra time in nature, especially in or near water to help calm your nerves, be available to spiritual experiences, while also remaining grounded
  • Find like minded women to share conversations and compare notes to help you realize that you are not special and yet you are not alone

All of the tips above will help you stay grounded as you wake up to your authentic power and purpose. This process will take time and will unfold as you allow it. If you are interested in women’s circle discussions, or one-on-one assistance and guidance in this process, please contact me.
